After Dwight Howard caused a stir with his comments to the media about not getting the ball enough in game 5. Things changed in game 6 and Orlando won 75 – 83 to force game 7. Still, Howard’s comments raised eyebrows about SVG’s future in Florida, but GM Otis Smith says Van Gundy is safe — for now.
“I don’t understand why he wouldn’t be,” Smith told the Sentinel on Thursday after shootaround. “He’s still the coach that he is. He still does a good job doing what he does.” Dwight Howard questioned why he didn’t get the ball more and second-guessed Van Gundy’s strategy late in the game. Smith said he talked to Howard about his comments to the media and preferred he handled it internally. “It’s probably the way he did it more than anything else,”Smith said. “My thing is we’re all men. When you have an issue with another man, go talk to that man.” Smith said he was not “overly concerned” with the Howard-Van Gundy tiff.
As long as Howard wants Van Gundy around, he’ll be around. Let’s see what D12 has to say after game 7 on Sunday.
