Rumours swirled about the sudden departure of Milwaukee Bucks center Larry Sander which led to him being bought out. Now in a video with the Players’ Tribune, Sanders clears the air about why he left basketball.
“Everyone’s come up with their own theories about why I’ve been absent since leaving the Bucks. I knew people would speculate, but the crazy thing to me is that people are making it about the money. As a person who grew up with nothing, I know money is important. I’m incredibly grateful to have had the chance to play in the NBA. But at the same time, that’s not what fuels me. I’ve never chased money. It’s never been how I define success. Happiness isn’t behind a golden gate.”
“I wish I could have said goodbye formally,” Sanders said about leaving the Bucks. “I want them to know it was never about them. It was never about the fans, because the way they treated me it was awesome. These decisions are for my family.”
Hopefully Sanders comes back to the game, but if it’s not to be. Let’s hope he finds the balance he seeks away from the game.
