When Kevin Durant officially accepted his first MVP award, he took the opportunity to deliver an emotional speech, thanking those who helped him to be recognized as the best in the league. Highlighting the list of people Durant thanked was his mom Wanda Pratt who raised him and his siblings through tough times in Washington, D.C.
“You made us believe,” Durant said to Pratt, who was at the ceremony in Edmond. “Kept us off the street. Put clothes on our backs, food on the table. When you didn’t eat, you made sure we ate. You sacrificed for us. You’re the real MVP.”
Durant also shared the small triumphs in his early life that helped him gain perspective.
“One of the best memories I had is when we moved into our first apartment,” he said as tears streamed down Pratt’s face. “No bed, no furniture, and we just all sat in the living room and hugged each other, ’cause that’s when we all thought we made it.”
As far as a Mother’s Day gift goes. It probably doesn’t get much better than thanking your mom during the biggest day of your career.
