It’s hard to believe, but Tyson Chandler and Kevin Love have known each other since Love was in the sixth grade. I bet you feel old now.
Way back in December of 2000 when hip-hop was still alive. Chandler’s high school (Dominguez) headed north to Portland for the Les Schwab Invitational and tournament organizers selected a group of local kids to serve as ball boys during the five-day, 16-team tournament. They drew out of a hat to determine the team they’d be assigned to for the week. Love, then a 6-foot-1 sixth grader, drew Dominguez.
“I followed Tyson around the whole week,” says Love. “I was this suburban, pudgy white kid thinking one day I could be as good as him.”
Nine years later before Timberwolves rookie Love played against Chandler’s Hornets for the first time. Love walked up to Chandler and asked, “Remember me?” Fast forward to today and the two are now teammates on Team USA one win away from a gold medal. Crazy.
