Commissioned by Boston Magazine, 22-year old artist Jesse Lenz created the kick @ss illustration of a bronzed up Bill Russell you see above for an article called “Give This Man A Damn Statue!” In the solid article written by Paul Flannery, he argues why other Boston sports hero’s such as Bobby Orr, Red Auerbach, and Ted Williams all have statues sprinkled throughout Boston. While 11-time NBA champ Bill Russell, who along with Henri Richard of the Montreal Canadiens holds the record for the most championships won by an athlete in a North American sports league does not.
“Bill Russell — the greatest (and most complicated) Celtic of them all — may not care one way or the other if his bronzed image goes up outside the Garden. But in a city with a past as complicated as our own, we should.”
Do yourself a favor and read why Russell should get a statue in Beantown here and to check out more work from the talented Jesse Lenz click here and yes, I think they should give the man a dams statue too.
