Paul Pierce said he plans to talk with the Celtics medical staff before chatting with Doc Rivers about shutting himself down before the end of the season. (The coach, aware of Pierce’s pronouncement that he was thinking about bowing out, said he favors him playing through any pains he’s able to.) Pierce does have some legitimate hurts (so the league won’t step in), and it wouldn’t hurt the team and its future if it cemented its position in the draft lottery. He noted that perhaps the worst thing that could happen now is for him to suffer a larger injury in his imperfect state that would hinder his offseason work. “I’ll just see what the doctors think and then go from there,†he said.”
