Miami Heat Visit Barack Obama at The White House

Hooped Up | January 28, 2013

miami-heat-white-house

Chicago guy and President of the United States Barack Obama honoured the Miami Heat today at a White House ceremony. In typical cool Obama style, he poked fun at the basketball skills of LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade while praising them for being responsible fathers.

“For all the young men out there who are looking up to them over time, for them to see somebody who cares about their kids and is there for them, day in, day out, that’s a good message to send,”

The Baller and Chief also had hilarious comments on Mike Miller calling him an old man and Juwan Howard calling hm an even older man. The President also recognized the Heat for supporting military service members at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Freshly Dipped: Barack Obama 44th President Limited Edition Jersey

Hooped Up | December 6, 2011

As it turns out even the President was effected by the lockout, as the “Obama Classic” exhibition game (doubling as a campaign fundraiser) was delayed until 2012 due to the lockout ending.

“We’re sorry to delay the event, but it’s safe to say this game will be worth waiting for. It’s going to be a great time,” reads the email to supporters. It was signed by NBA stars Vince Carter, Baron Davis and Chris Paul. All three are confirmed to play in the game.

No matter, at least you can still score a commemorative ”Barack Obama 44th President Limited Edition jersey” Made of 2-Ply tricot mesh. That’s something — right?

Barack Obama Punahou High School Basketball Card

Hooped Up | November 28, 2011

Back in 2008 Topps announced its non-sport set of President-elect Barack Obama who some folks called “Barry O’bomber” for his jump shot, that includes a card him in his Punahou High School basketball uniform on a vintage 1978 Topps basketball card design. One word, bitchin’.

Obama Honors Bill Russell At White House

Hooped Up | February 16, 2011

President Barack Obama awarded the nation’s highest civil honor to Dr. Maya Angelou, Warren Buffett, Stan Musial and Boston Celtics legend Bill Russell, along with several others, for their contributions to society in a ceremony at the White House Tuesday.

“Bill Russell, the man, is someone who stood up for the rights and dignity of all men,’’ Obama said. “He marched with King; he stood by Ali. When a restaurant refused to serve the black Celtics, he refused to play in the scheduled game. He endured insults and vandalism, but he kept on focusing on making the teammates who he loved better players, and made possible the success of so many who would follow. I hope that one day, in the streets of Boston, children will look up at a statue built not only to Bill Russell the player, but Bill Russell the man.’’

Now all Boston has to do is put up a Bill Russell statue outside of the Boston Gardens. The medal President Barack Obama presented Bill Russell with was the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Barack Obama & The Lakers Team Up

Hooped Up | December 16, 2010

Another year, another championship and yet another chance for the Lakers to meet up with President Barack Obama at the White House before playing the Wizards. Just one more of the perks involved with winning back-to-back NBA titles, that’s all.

This time around, the Lakers and Barack Obama switched things up from the last time they visited with a community twist by spending time with kids from the Boys & Girls Club of America. I wonder if Kobe Bryant can make it three visits with the President in a row in 2011?
