The 5 Best Basketball Movies Ever!

Hooped Up | July 3, 2008

5. Above the Rim (1994)

Starring: Duane Martin, Leon, Tupac Shakur, Marlon Wayans, Bernie Mac
Director: Jeff Pollack

The basketball action was way to scripted although good and the story of inner-city youth using sports to escape the ghetto…kinda old. However, Tupac’s potrayal as the local kingpin is too real and the soundtrack is easliy the best on the list.Plus you, you know you were trying to bring Kyle Watson’s game to the park back in the day after watching this flick.

Memorable Quotes: Birdie - “I’m the one! Shit has changed! It’s a new day, bro. If you can’t clean up your act,I suggest you raise the f*ck up and get the hell out of Dodge… or get caught up.”

Canada Sets Roster For Olympic Qualifier

Hooped Up | July 1, 2008

What’s more Canadian than Hockey?  Well…nothing but, Basketball Canada named it’s 12 man roster to qualify for the Beijing Olympics over the weekend.  Samuel Dalembert of the Philadelphia 76ers is the lone NBA player included on the Canadian squad and I’ve gotta say.  Being that Steve Nash is only a two time NBA MVP; Canada should be doing everything short of babysitting Steve and his wife Alejandra’s kids for him to come out of International retirement.

Here is Canada’s 12-man roster:

Player Position Team Hometown
Joel Anthony Forward/Centre Miami Heat Montreal
Jermaine Anderson Guard Tuebingen Tigers (Germany) Toronto
Rowan Barrett Guard Chalon-Sure-Saone (France) Toronto
Samuel Dalembert Centre Philadelphia 76ers Montreal
Carl English Guard Gran Canaria (Spain) Patrick’s Cove, NL.
Olu Famutimi Forward Khimik (Ukraine) Toronto
Levon Kendall Forward Panionios (Greece) Vancouver
Tyler Kepkay Guard University of Utah (NCAA) Vancouver
Juan Mendez Forward LZ Rishon (Israel) Montreal
Andy Rautins Guard Syracuse University (NCAA) Toronto
Dave Thomas Forward Melbourne Tigers (Australia) Brampton, Ont.
Jesse Young Forward Estudiant (Spain) Peterborough, Ont.

Suns Shopping For Steve Nash Back Up

Hooped Up |

Phoenix will target a backup point guard, a shooter and a big man in free agency. The Sunsare determined to lighten 34-year-old point guardSteve Nash’s load. The point-guard target list includes 31-year-old Tyronn Lue. The speedy 6-footer is a 39 percent career 3-point shooter and friend of Suns center Shaquille O’Neal. In March, he considered the Suns before signing with Dallas. Anthony Johnson, a 33-year-old who has switched teams nine times, and Chris Duhon, a pricier prospect, also interest the Suns. For a wing player, the Suns like Jarvis Hayes. He played for the Detroit Pistons last season when new Suns coach Terry Porter was an assistant there.

The Len Bias Story 22 Years Later

Hooped Up |

The 1986 NBA Draft was held on June 17, 1986 and is perhaps most notable for the drug-related death of highly-touted Len Bias less than two days after being selected second overall by the defending champion Boston Celtics.  Each year around NBA draft day, the pre-cautionary tale of Len Bias comes en vogue and we are reminded of the most tragic event in NBA draft history.

As fate would have it, Bias has now been dead for as long as he was alive, the Celtics are once again NBA champions and Micheal Weinreb has written The Day Innocence Died, the best Len Bias story I have ever read.

After reading this story readers will truly understand the ripple effect caused by the death of Len Bias.

Hooped Up |

I am loving the Steve Nash workout program, up until the tennis bit.  Who wouldn’t want to skateboard and play soccer as part of training?
