Cuttino Mobley Suing Knicks

Former NBA guard Cuttino Mobley has filed a lawsuit against Madison Square Garden, accusing the New York Knicks of pressuring him to retire in 2008 as a way to save money.

Mobley retired because of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a heart disease, shortly after the Knicks acquired him from the Los Angeles Clippers. He knew he had an irregularity with the heart, but an MRI exam revealed the more serious condition.

The lawsuit filed Wednesday in the Southern District of New York says the Knicks sent Mobley to a specialist they knew would oppose him playing, so insurance could pay his contract and it wouldn’t count against the luxury tax.

The Knicks say they are “extremely disappointed” in Mobley’s actions and are confident the case has no merit.
