Hooped Up

Attitude issues, suspicion of drug use and paranoia over his future in Miami all contributed to a path that recently led Heat forward Michael Beasley to a Houston rehabilitation center, multiple sources confirmed Monday. Beasley, the second overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft, has been in counseling at the undisclosed facility to address psychological issues and apparent drug use for as many as two weeks.

Details of Beasley’s attendance emerged Monday in the wake of several disturbing comments and a controversial photo recently posted on his Twitter account. The Heat had strongly encouraged Beasley, 20, to seek help and received backing from the league.

Michael Beasley a.k.a Supercool Beas took some pictures over the weekend displaying his new tattoo of his nickname, but those in the know focused on the table to the right of him. The twisted up baggies next to the 7-Up bottle to “Supercool Beas” kinda looked like chiba, sensei, ganja, reefer or grass if you’re a suburban mom who grew up in the 60’s.

Today, Yahoo! Sports broke the news that “Superhigh Beas” will be checking into a Houston rehab center and I’m guessing it’s not for his love of 7-Up. Since posting his “Supercool Beas” picture on Twitter, Beasley (@GorillaBeas) tanked his Twitter page like it wasn’t too late, but not before he Twitted some darkness for his Tweeps.

As Starbury TV continues to roll, it just keeps on getting better. One could argue that Starburys online presence could be wrecking his chances of signing with a new team, but as long as he’s willing to be the best entertainer in the NBA. I’ll allow him to take that risk.

Last night on Starbury TV, Marbury took a long draw of collie weed live for the world to see like it was nuttin’ and today after the footage went viral. Marbury addressed the footage by straight up admitting on camera that he smokes marijuana. Your move David Stern.

Former NBA player and University of Cincinnati basketball star Corie Blount will be sentenced on marijuana charges that could put him in prison up to 10 years.

Wednesday’s sentencing in Ohio’s Butler County comes more than a month after the 40-year-old Blount pleaded guilty to two felony possession counts. As part of a plea bargain, prosecutors dropped two trafficking charges.

Blount was arrested Dec. 4 after sheriff’s deputies intercepted 11 pounds of marijuana sent to him at a relative’s house. Investigators said they found another 18 pounds in a subsequent search of Blount’s home.

Blount was a first-round draft pick by the Chicago Bulls in 1993 and played for several other teams, including the Cleveland Cavaliers, during an 11-year NBA career.

My questions in all of this is, A) how do you hide a 6′9″ guy in a hotel room with 4 other people in it already?  Is Michael Beasley, Solid Snake?  And B) who doesn’t know that smoke alarms detect smoke? Now next year, not only does the NBA have to invite the D.A.R.E people to this rookie gathering but,  Smokey the Bear too.

Hopefully next time rivals Kansas State University and Kansas University decide to smoke a “peace pipe”, they pick a better / smarter spot.

“The NBA announced a $50,000 fine for Heat forward Michael Beasley, the second overall pick in the draft.

He was involved in the same marijuana-related episode that resulted in $20,000 fines for Heat guard Mario Chalmers and Memphis Grizzlies forward Darrell Arthur.

Chalmers and Arthur, college teammates at Kansas, also were sent home from the four-day event earlier this month at a hotel in Rye, N.Y. The league said Beasley was fined for his involvement and “for his initial failure to cooperate with a league investigation of the matter.”

According to NBA sources, Beasley was in a hotel room with Chalmers, Arthur and two women when the incident took place, but he might have been hiding.

The incident occurred when hotel security investigated a smoke alarm going off. When they used a pass key to enter the room, they smelled marijuana. No drugs were found, and Chalmers and Arthur denied using any.

Beasley intially was cleared by the NBA, but apparently came forward later.”

My guess is that they never covered the weed unit before this happened.

“Mario Chalmers and Darrell Arthur were dismissed from the NBA’s rookie transition program Wednesday morning after being caught with marijuana, according to reports.  

“They violated program rules and were sent home,” NBA spokesman Tim Frank told PA SportsTicker.

Frank refused to disclose what rules the University of Kansas products broke.

Chalmers and Arthur also were fined $20,000 apiece and will start the regular season on the suspended list, according to reports.”

When the NBA office called Indiana Pacers president Larry Bird the other day, the news was as shocking as it was disheartening. The Pacers’ underachieving and monumentally disappointing young center, David Harrison, had tested positive for marijuana for the third time in his career, drawing a five-game suspension. Turns out, Bird and the Pacers organization had no idea that Harrison had tested positive for anything. Ever. That’s league policy as it relates to marijuana. And that’s ridiculous.
