The Best Holiday Promo Belongs To Memphis

Hooped Up | December 9, 2009

I’ve watched this video about ten times since morning and I can see that number getting into the twenties before midnight. Hats off to the digital wizards in the Memphis Grizzlies front office.

OJ Mayo Gives Back For Thanksgiving

Hooped Up | November 23, 2009

Over the weekend, O.J. Mayo of the Grizzlies donated 500 turkeys and 500 hams to 1,000 needy families in the Huntington, West Virgina area so they too could enjoy their Thanksgiving.

The food was distributed Saturday at the A.D. Lewis Community Center, where Mayo honed his athletic skills as a youngster. His mother Alisha said it was her son’s way of expressing his love for his hometown and the people who live there.

In September, the Grizzlies guard paid for food and personal care items that were given to 400 families in Huntington. Mayo played at Huntington High his senior season before spending one year at Southern California.

Yeah, you’re right Tommy! That was way better than another Allen Iverson story.

Memphis Grizzlies ‘09-10 Season Preview

Hooped Up | October 29, 2009

Another van glorious season of NBA basketball is about to begin and Hooped Up does a quick and dirty preview of all 30 clubs.

This summer the Grizzlies took a leap towards respectably by grabbing Allen Iverson, but unfortunately they also grabbed Zach Randolph too. Will those two moves balance out into some kinda crazy win formula? The Grizzlies sure hope so. Read More »

The Beale Street Blue Memphis Grizzlies

Hooped Up | October 20, 2009

The Memphis Grizzlies have unveiled a third uniform for the ‘09-10 season and the base color of the new uniform is Beale Street Blue, with a neon shimmer look to mirror the signs on Beale Street that give off the same vibrant glow.

If you want to believe that designer BS you can, but I have the truth!

After the jump, see what the new Grizzlies uniform is really based on. You’ll be all shook up.

Kevin Durant Continues To Be A Horse

Hooped Up | February 15, 2009

If you can see this, then you might need a Flash Player upgrade or you need to install Flash Player if it's missing. Get Flash Player from Adobe.

The NBA H-O-R-S-E competition happened on Valentines Day,  and I totally missed it because my girlfriend had a way better offer.

All I know is that the OKC Thunder ride Kevin Durant like a horse so, it was only fitting that he won this weekends game of
H-O-R-S-E.

So if you missed the competition because your girlfriend had an “offer” for you too. Enjoy the spliced together footage of the event above and continue to regret nothing.

The NBA H-O-R-S-E Competitors Are Set

Hooped Up | February 11, 2009

The competitors for this weekends all-star game of H-O-R-S-E, renamed G-E-I-C-O because insurance is required everywhere you don’t need it, are set.

Kevin Durant, O.J. Mayo, and Joe Johnson have been selected and will shoot it out, to see who’s the best. Each player will have 24 seconds to create or re-create their shots, with an NBA referee ruling if they’re re-created correctly and dunking won’t be allowed, which was a great call by the NBA.

I’m really expecting this all-star weekend to be better than last years and this universal H-O-R-S-E contest, should crank up the level of fun the all-star weekends of past have missed.

That being said, bet the house on Joe Johnson because his accuracy for difficult shots are silly like dat!

Classic footage of what you can expect from this weekends game of H-O-R-S-E, after the jump.

Hooped Up: Memphis Grizzlies 08-09 Season Preview

Hooped Up | October 29, 2008

A team-by-team preview of all 30 NBA teams heading into the 2008 – 2009 season, Hooped Up style.

Memphis Grizzlies
Losing games will never look so fun! This squad has a bunch of young talent that can fastbreak and finish like nobody’s business. Thanks to a big assist from Kevin McHale the Grizzlies were able to nab OJ Mayo and then they were able to get Marc Gasol in the trade for his brother to the Lakers. It will be a long season for the Grizzlies again and losing with these guys hangs around like an unpaid bill.

So where does this group go from here?

Projected Starters: PG - Michael Conley / SG - OJ Mayo / SF - Rudy Gay / PF - Hakim Warrick / C - Marc Gasol

Additions: O.J. Mayo, Darrell Arthur, Marc Gasol,Antoine Walker, Marko Jaric, Quinton Ross, Brent Petway , Greg Buckner, Hamed Haddadi

Losses: Mike Miller, Kevin Love, Juan Carlos Navarro, Jason Collins, Brian Cardinal, Kwame Brown, Andre Brown, Casey Jacobsen

Projected Wins: 22+

Team Theme Song:  Guru feat MC Solaar – Le Bien, Le Mal
The good, a lot of young talent…the bad, a tradition of losing.

Overall
The young talent on this Grizzlies team has enough upside to make you puke. OJ Mayo is a bonafide creative off guard, Micheal Conley is a confident and speedy point guard, Rudy Gay can run and jump like a gazelle, Marc Gasol is a big fundamentally sound center and Hakim Warrick finishes extremely well. This team will struggle with their interior defense because they lack a shot blocker but this will improve overtime or with a defensive addition down the road. Give them time.

They won’t win games, but the fastbreak in Memphis will be video game like.

Mayo Gets High Praise From Kobe

Hooped Up | July 30, 2008

Kobe Bryant, who lives for one-on-one challenges, went at it with former Trojan and soon-to-be Memphis Grizzlies rookie O.J. Mayo, a member of the U.S. Select team, last week in Las Vegas. “Kobe completely shut him down in the beginning,” said U.S. managing director Jerry Colangelo. “But the longer they went, the better Mayo got.” Bryant already knew Mayo, who attended his camp last summer, and already thought highly of him. “I think the world of him,” Bryant said. “I think he’s extremely talented. I think he has a great overall game that a lot of young players don’t have in terms of skills. He can handle, he can shoot, he can pass, he’s fast, he’s quick, so that’s the whole package.”

Hooped Up | July 15, 2008

Hilton Armstrong knows OJ Mayo now if he didn’t before.  Does McHale know what he is doing?
