Josh Smith believes that not only is Mike Bibby the starting point guard for the Atlanta Hawks, but he is also the team Genie lamp.

At the (0:10) mark, Bibby physically reminds Smith that everybody on the squad only gets three wishes and he’s reached his wish maximum.

Bibby Signs A Three-Year Deal To Stay In ATL

Hooped Up | July 7, 2009

Free agent point guard Mike Bibby has agreed to a three-year deal worth an estimated $18 million to return to the Hawks, according to two people familiar with the situation.

[...] Bibby, 31, guided the Hawks to back-to-back playoff appearances in his year and half with the team after being acquired in a trade with Sacramento at the trade deadline in February 2008.

An 11-year veteran, Bibby averaged 14.9 points, 5.0 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.2 last season for the Hawks, who won 47 games during the regular season and advanced to the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs for the first time in over a decade.

Hooped Up: Atlanta Hawks 08-09 Season Preview

Hooped Up | October 26, 2008

A team-by-team preview of all 30 NBA teams heading into the 2008 – 2009 season, Hooped Up style.

Atlanta Hawks
Josh Childress is chiilin’ in Greece with a large contract, Marvin Williams is going to get a chance to prove he wasn’t a bust, Josh Smith got the contract he should of had from the beginning of the summer , Mike Bibby gives them the point guard upgrade they have always needed and Joe Johnson still has one of the smoothest games in the league.  After taking the eventual NBA champion Boston Celtics to seven games in the playoffs, the entire ATL is excited to get this season started.

But was last year a fluke?

Projected Starters: PG - Mike Bibby / SG - Joe Johnson / SF - Marvin Williams / PF - Josh Smith / C -  Al Horford

Additions:  Randolph Morris, Maurice Evans, Flip Murray, Thomas Gardner, Othello Hunter

Losses: Josh Childress, Salim Stoudamire, Jeremy Richardson

Projected Wins: 40+

Team Theme Song:  Kid ‘N’ Play – Energy
This is a very energetic squad and other clubs will have difficulties keeping up with the staring fives active legs. Ask the Celtics.

Overall
Losing Josh Childress was big but since they drafted Marvin Williams so high a few years back they might as well see if he’s got the mustard. The bench isn’t that deep but Zaza Pachulia and Ronald Murray should provide decent minutes for coach Mike Woodson when inserted into the line up.  Al Horford will build on he previous NBA campaign and be important to the line up and Joe Johnson will do all the things he does that makes him a special player in the league.

This team is playoff bound but it will come down to the wire in an improving east.

Bizarre NBA Athlete Superstitions

Hooped Up | April 20, 2008

Mike Bibby
Like fellow NBA star LeBron James, Bibby has been known to nervously bite and chew his nails during games. When relegated to the bench for a breather during games with the Sacramento Kings, Bibby would obsessively pick at his nails until he stumbled across a better solution: using fingernail clippers on the bench. The clippers became his superstition, and whenever Bibby came to the bench for timeouts, someone would hand him a set so he could go to work on his nails.

Caron Butler
When most of us want a glass of something heavily caffeinated that fluoresces green, we can just reach for a Mountain Dew. Sadly for Washington Wizards’ All-Star small forward Caron Butler, he can’t do the Dew whenever he wants anymore. As Butler told Dan Steinberg of the fantastic D.C. Sports Bog, he would guzzle a two-liter bottle of the sugary soda before and during every game dating back to his All-American career at the University of Connecticut. Butler would throw down half the bottle before the game, then finish it off at halftime. That is, until the Wizards clamped down and forced him to switch to a more traditional sports drink, water.

Jason Terry
Bibby and Terry, college teammates at Arizona, started another odd superstition while playing for the Wildcats. The restless pair slept in the uniform shorts the night before each Arizona game on the logic that it would make the game feel like it was starting sooner. When Terry broke into the NBA with the Atlanta Hawks, he decided to start wearing the shorts of the next day’s opponent, instead. This ritual is fairly tenuous, though, as it requires Terry to procure a pair of uniform shorts from each opposing NBA team. Although his network of connections with equipment managers and former teammates has helped him out, he had to wear Mavericks shorts before each game of the 2006 NBA Finals since he couldn’t find a pair of Heat trunks.

Bibby To Hawks, No Bird Rights In Sight

Hooped Up | February 16, 2008

The Atlanta Hawks have agreed to acquire veteran point guard Mike Bibby from the Sacramento Kings.

Hawks owner Michael Gearon Jr. says the Hawks are to send four players to the Kings. Among them are 2007 first-round pick Shelden Williams and starting point guard Anthony Johnson.

The Hawks also would send guard Tyronn Lue and veteran forward-center Lorenzen Wright to the Kings.

Bibby’s Stock Rising

Hooped Up | January 28, 2008

Sacramento point guard Mike Bibby: His stock is rising now that he’s back from a thumb surgery and showing signs of his old self. In his first six games, Bibby averaged 14.7 points, knocking down 48 percent of his 3-pointers, and 4.0 assists per contest. Teams desperate for a scoring guard, especially at the point, such as Cleveland and Charlotte, might want to sweeten their offer to Sacramento.
