Homer News: San Antonio Spurs (37-25)

Hooped Up | March 11, 2010

Ginobili’s surge continues in Spurs’ win
Manu Ginobili doesn’t presume to know what it’s like to be Tracy McGrady. Ginobili has had injuries, but not a knee injury. He’s had surgery, but not microfracture. He’s missed months, but not an entire season.

Still, after watching McGrady feel his way around the AT&T Center in a New York Knicks jersey Wednesday night, during what became a 97-87 Spurs victory, Ginobili could sympathize with what McGrady was going through. This is what it looks like when a former star is just trying to be a basketball player again.

“He’s coming from a way worse situation than me,” Ginobili said. “It’s not an easy spot to be.”

The same McGrady who once scored 13 points in 33 seconds against the Spurs managed only six in 25 minutes Wednesday. If McGrady could take anything out of his 10th game of the season, it is this: People once wondered whether Ginobili could ever be Ginobili again, too…

The Spurs denied the Thunder a win, and Manu Ginobili denied Kevin Durant of a dunk and his 30th straight game with at least 25 points or more — big time!

Ginobili Will Sit For One More Game

Hooped Up | November 25, 2009

It was one week ago that Spurs guard Manu Ginobili was declared out of the lineup for a week to 10 days with a mild strain of the left groin, but don’t look for him in uniform when the Spurs play the Golden State Warriors tonight at the AT&T Center.

“Manu’s out,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said before his team’s Tuesday afternoon practice session. “He’s doing workouts, doing what he needs to do to rehab it every day, so it’s getting better every day, but it’s going to take more time. When he’s ready, he’ll play.”

If the original timetable proves accurate, Ginobili should be back on the floor by week’s end.

Manu Ginobili Kills A Bat

Yesterday all things weird and ghoulish happened in the spirit of Halloween, including the stat line of Manu Ginobili in a 113 – 94 win over the Sacramento Kings. 13 points, 3 assist and 1 steal and 1 slain rogue bat. Now that’s a stat line Vincent Price would be proud of — PETA, not so much.

Ginobili Is On The Trading Block

Hooped Up | June 11, 2009

A team put in a call to the Spurs last season with a legitimate offer for Manu Ginobili. “Helluva player for a helluva player,” is the way Gregg Popovich describes the proposal now. Popovich’s answer then is the same as it is now, even after Ginobili ended another season with a limp. Popovich has always loved the guy, and he knows a healthy Ginobili can’t be replaced. But there’s another reason Ginobili will be a Spur as long as he is upright. He’s also a helluva draw at the box office. rumor surfaced this month that the Wizards called the Spurs with an offer for him, and maybe all of this made Ginobili wonder if the ground had shifted. Asked by the Argentine press this week whether he thought he could be traded, he said “impossible” had lost a few letters.

Ginobili’s Rehab On Schedule

Hooped Up | June 8, 2009

In his first interview since April 5, the day before a stress fracture in his right distal fibula put a premature end to the most tumultuous season of his career, Manu Ginobili said Sunday that he expects to be fully recovered by the opening of training camp in October. “For the past month or so, I haven’t felt any pain, even to the touch,” Ginobili said. “I don’t have any doubt I’ll be 100 percent before training camp starts.” Much is riding on Ginobili’s latest recovery effort. Nothing the Spurs accomplish this offseason, either via the draft or free agency, will mean much if Ginobili cannot approach the form that made him the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year in 2007-08.

Manu Ginobili Out For Season

Hooped Up | April 7, 2009

Chasing down the red hot Denver Nuggets for the second seed in the west, just got a lot tougher for the San Antonio Spurs without the services of one Manu Ginobili.

“Spurs guard Manu Ginobili will miss the rest of the National Basketball Association season and the playoffs with a right ankle injury, the team said.

Tests on Monday indicated that Ginobili’s ankle injury, which caused him to miss 19 games since the All-Star break in February before returning in late March, has gotten worse.

In February, Ginobili was diagnosed with a “stress reaction” of his right fibula, but he now has a stress fracture, the Spurs said.

Ginobili did not play in the fourth quarter Sunday as the Spurs lost at Cleveland.”

Manu Down For Three Weeks

Hooped Up | February 20, 2009

The left ankle of Manu Ginobili that caused him to miss 12 games at the beginning of the season is just fine — it’s just to bad his right ankle isn’t.

Ginobili is expected to be sidelined for up to three weeks due to an ankle injury, the team announced on Thursday.

Ginobili initially sustained the injury against the Golden State Warriors on February 2. Though he played through it, recent X-rays revealed the ailment.
