CSKA Wants Kirilenko

Hooped Up | September 17, 2008

Will Andrei Kirilenko go back to Russia and spurn the NBA?

“CSKA wants to offer Kirilenko a contract to rival that of other NBA stars and what seems to be the appeal in this case for CSKA is that Kirilenko, doesn’t occupy the position of non-russian player, which allows CSKA to keep him in the roster at all times, the same reason they got Khryapa and Khaun,i.e. to get ahead of the competition. It also says that this might be the reason that Kirilenko has not renewed with the Utah Jazz yet.”

Was Dennis Rodman The Best Athlete On Any Phil Jackson Coached Team?

Hooped Up | August 28, 2008

While receiving an honorary degree from his alma matter. Phil Jackson had this to say regarding the best athlete he has ever coached when asked as reported by the OC Register.

“No, the player Jackson called the greatest that he has coached is that wedding dress aficionado and Newport Beach police’s favorite basketball bad boy, Dennis Rodman. That’s right. No need to rub your eyes.

“He could probably play a 48-minute game and play the 48th minute stronger than the first minute of the game,” Jackson told the crowd at UND. “He was that terrific an athlete.”

Kirilenko Honored To Carry Russian Flag Into Olympics

Hooped Up | August 4, 2008

Last year, Andrei Kirilenko led his Russian men’s national basketball team in the 2007 European Championships.

This Friday, he’ll lead — in a different way — Russia’s entire Olympic sports delegation in the Beijing Summer Games’ opening ceremonies. Kirilenko has been selected to carry the Russian flag as he and his Olympic peers enter into and parade around Beijing’s National Stadium.

“Representing in front of the world, you know, is a big honor,” said the longtime Utah Jazz forward, “and I will try to do my best.”

AK47 Feeling Much Better

Hooped Up | November 28, 2007

Andrei Kirilenko was asked about his summer of discontent prior to the Jazz’s 113-109 loss at New York on Monday and shed some light on just where things stand.

“It was tough year last year, and it’s been a lot of disappointments for me,” the forward from Russia said. “And, you know, in your mind you start just talk to yourself a little bit. It’s like, ‘Man, it’s not everything.’ You need to think about basketball, but, you know, in a positive way. Right now, I’m changed completely. I feel way different.”

“It’s way different,” Kirilenko added. “It’s way different. I feel much better.”

Kirilenko Reached Out To John Amaechi

Hooped Up | February 8, 2007

John Amaechi thought Andrei Kirilenko was aware and accepting of his lifestyle and that Kirilenko invited Amaechi and a partner, if he had one, to a 2002 Christmas party but that Amaechi declined because he was having his own party.

Amaechi said he sent Kirilenko a $500 bottle of champagne in thanks for a gesture “that meant the world to me, especially in the middle of a dreadful season in a strange desert state that in the end provided some of the best days of my life.

“It also showed that in my own paranoia and overwhelming desire for privacy, I’d failed to give some of my teammates the benefit of the doubt,” Sheridan quoted Amaechi as writing.
