Magic Deal Dooling To Nets

Hooped Up | July 21, 2008

Any program from a Nets’ game this past season already is horribly dated. And it’s going to get worse within a few days when Keyon Dooling is added after a sign-and-trade deal with Orlando is finalized. Dooling, 28, a 6-foot-3 combo guard, will fill the Nets’ most conspicuous need as a backup at both guard positions. The Nets and Magichave worked out the trade that still needs league approval.

Can Jay-Z Help Nets Land LeBron James?

Hooped Up | June 27, 2008

The Nets gave themselves maximum financial effectiveness ($22 million under the projected cap of $58M, July 1, 2010) to recruit potential free agent (while boxing out the Knicks) LeBron James. . .and Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh. Clearing cap room two years ahead of time on the belief James’ outwardly magnetic bond with Nets’ minority owner Jay-Z (it’s not as if he rhymes as tight as Biggie Smalls) will influence him to forsake his home state of Ohio is like building an elaborate spec house just across the Brooklyn Bridge in today’s saggy, baggy real estate market.

Nets Trade Jefferson To Bucks for Yi

Hooped Up |

The New Jersey Nets decided to part ways with the second-leading scorer in franchise history, dealing Richard Jefferson to Milwaukee hours before last night’s draft for forwards Yi Jianlian and Bobby Simmons.

“We certainly gave up a good player, but to get a good player you have to give up a good player. With Yi, we feel his upside is very up,” Nets president Rod Thorn said. “We feel strongly he’s going to be a real good player for us.”

No draft picks were swapped in the trade.

Bargaining For Bargnani?

Hooped Up | May 21, 2008

Hopefully, the Raptors come to their senses and 86 the inconsistent Andrea Bargnani.

The New Jersey Nets appear to be active on the rumor mill, with GM Ron Thorn believed to be in discussions with many teams, the Newark Star-Ledger is reporting.

According to columnist Dave D’Alessandro, the Nets have made some cursory inquiries with Phoenix (about Boris Diaw and Leandro Barboso), more substantive discussions with Toronto (about Andrea Bargnani), and there has been some dialogue with Denver about Carmelo Anthony.

Could Carter come back to Toronto on this one?

Get Carter

Hooped Up | February 20, 2008

Multiple sources told ESPN.com that talks with the Indiana Pacers regarding a Carter-for-Jermaine O’Neal swap were dormant, but not dead, after the Nets spent nearly a week devoting their attention to the Kidd deal with Dallas. Another source said there had been preliminary discussions on a three-way trade that would include, among other things, Carter going to the New York Knicks, Eddy Curry to Miami and the expiring contracts of Jason Williams and Ricky Davis to New Jersey. Speaking with writers at the team’s headquarters Tuesday, Thorn was asked if the continued delays in the Kidd trade — first agreed to last Wednesday but not completed until Tuesday — had impacted him on other trade fronts.

Will Van Horn Do It?

Hooped Up | February 19, 2008

Keith Van Horn either has cold feet, or feels that a $2M payday for taking a physical is shameless and needs time to think it through, or he just doesn’t want any part of it. Falk won’t say which is closest to the truth. “I really can’t say,” the agent said. “He wants some quiet time to reflect on it. And that’s what he should be doing. “He’ll make a decision, but it’s not going to be ‘maybe,’ or 70-30. Either he’ll do it or he won’t do it. And we’ll all know in the next 48 to 72 hours.”
