Boozer Waits For MRI

Hooped Up | November 21, 2008

The Utah Jazz are one banged up unit with a laundry list of injuries on their roster.  Carlos Boozer is their latest injured player and he know awaits a MRI to see what repairs are needed to get him back to the line up.  My ironic suggestion for a injured player with the last name Boozer in a Mormon state…a tall Guinness.

“Jazz All-Star power forward Carlos Boozer is undergoing an MRI on his strained quad muscle this morning. Boozer’s status for Friday night’s game at San Antonio won’t be known until the team gets the tests results later today. Boozer was injured with 3:55 left in the Jazz’s 105-94 victory over Milwaukee on Wednesday night at EnergySolutions Arena. He scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds before hobbling off the court after a scramble for a loose ball.”

Deron Will Make Debut

Hooped Up | November 11, 2008

Deron Williams could be inserted into the Utah Jazz line up as early as tonight for his first game of the season against the 76ers . With all the injury news these days I’m glad some body’s coming back.

“Point guard Deron Williams informed the Jazz this morning that he will try to make his 2008-09 NBA season debut tonight, when Utah visits Philadelphia in its second outing of a five-game road trip. “He told me he’s gonna play,” Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said after the team’s morning shootaround at Wachovia Center here. “We’ll probably play him sparingly. “You know how he is,” Sloan added. “He might want to get out there five minutes and say he feels great. But we’re gonna try to watch him pretty close.”

Jazz Owner Bans “Zack And Miri Make A Porno”

Hooped Up | October 31, 2008

Utah Jazz owner Larry Miller does not want you to see the latest Kevin Smith comedy titled “Zack And Miri Make A Porno” so bad, that he has pulled it from his chain of megaplex theaters.  Don’t worry thought, he’s okay with Saw V because a guy only gets cut in half and he knows guidance counselors and sex ed teachers have covered that chapter already.

“We feel [Zack and Miri] is very close to an NC-17 with its graphic nudity and graphic sex,” the chain’s General Manager Cal Gunderson [who I guaran-goddamn-tee you hasn't seen it] said. Asked why Megaplex has no problem showing the R-rated, ultra-violent “Saw V,” which shows a man forced to crush his own hands to escape a pendulum cutting him in half, Gunderson said: “No comment.”

NY Post

Below is the trailer for “Zack And Miri Make A Porno” out today and it’s SFW, unless you work for Larry Miller. Read the rest of this entry »

Hooped Up: Utah Jazz 08-09 Season Preview

Hooped Up | October 27, 2008

A team-by-team preview of all 30 NBA teams heading into the 2008 - 2009 season, Hooped Up style.

Utah Jazz
The Jazz did little to bolster their line up and they really didn’t need to anyway. Deron Williams is one of the best point guards in the league, Carlos Boozer is a legit 20 - 10 guy, Mehmet Okur is a center with range and rebounds and Ronnie Brewer is a mid range sniper.  This Jazz squad is so good they can afford to start CJ Miles over defensive wiz Andrei Kirilenko and that’s pretty good.

Every year it’s close in the west, do the Jazz have what it takes to separate from the pack?

Projected Starters: PG - Deron Wiliams / SG - Ronnie Brewer / SF - CJ Miles / PF - Carlos Boozer / C - Mehmet Okur

Additions: Kosta Koufas, Ante Tomic, Tadija Dragicevic, Brevin Knight

Losses: Jason Hart

Projected Wins: 55+

Team Theme Song:  The Roots - What They Do
Jerry Sloan has been the coach of the Utah Jazz for the last 20 years, and has had only one losing season. Let this group do what they do.

Overall
AK47 will probably get his starting job back, Ronnie Price will get some quality minutes as Deron Williams works himself back into the line up, Jarron Collins will not drive a golf cart anywhere unlike his brother, and Kyle Korver will continue to be deadly from long range. This team will flirt with the best record  in the west and probably in the league.  For the system Sloan runs, he could not have asked for a more perfect group and they will do damage with their interior game.  If only Sloan could channel Mark Eaton from 1985, to rustle up some shot blocking now.

This Jazz team looks good but, after the second round its a crap shoot.

Williams Out Two Weeks

Hooped Up | October 21, 2008

Williams being out of the Jazz line up is terrible news for the Utah in the deep west where every games counts and even worse news for fantasy owners hoping for a good start to the season.

“The Jazz now say point guard Deron Williams will be out at least two weeks because of the sprained left ankle he sustained in Saturday night’s preseason game at Chicago. That means he’s likely to miss the team’s Oct. 29 regular-season opener vs. Denver, plus possibly one or two more games – including a pair against the Elton Brand-less Los Angeles Clippers, who have an injured point guard of their own in Baron Davis.”

AK47 Could Be The Sixth Man

Hooped Up | October 8, 2008

Every season AK47 seems to be falling out of the spotlight with the Jazz and this year might be the year he is relegated to the role of sixth man.

“He has started 371 of 492 games during his seven regular seasons in Utah, and another 33 of 38 playoff games with the Jazz. He’s also started all 171 games – regular season, and postseason – over the past two NBA campaigns. But after their 99-90 preseason-opening win over the Los Angeles Lakers late Tuesday night, Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said he may consider bringing small forward Andrei Kirilenko off the bench.”

Kickball King Kyle Korver

Hooped Up | September 24, 2008

Kyle Korver is officially the the kickball king! As a follow up to the Kyle Korver post from last week, and his attempt to break the world record for the longest kickball game ever played.  After 24 hours and 15 minutes, 164 full innings,  213 total runs scored, and popped 5 kickballs a new record was set and $10,000 was raised for local kids.  Awesome!!!

Already, overseas kickball teams are now clamoring to sign, the Michael Jordan of kickball and a film is in the works with Ashton Kutcher in the lead role.

Kyle Korver Will Attempt Kickball Record For Charity

Hooped Up | September 19, 2008

Today, the Facebook profile for Kyle Korver will read “Kyle Korver is playing kick ball”, and his Myspace mood will be kicky. That’s because Kyle Korver and his friends will be playing a whole lotta kick ball over the next 25 hours for charity, with the goal of raising $10,000 for the Helping Hand Rescue Mission in North Philadelphia.

If you live in Philly, you can go down to show your support for this kick @ss cause.

“Jazz forward Kyle Korver will be shooting for — or, more accurately, kicking for — a Guinness World Record today. In an effort to raise money for one of his favorite charities, Korver will be part of a group hoping to play the longest kickball game in history. To kick the current record to the curb, Korver and friends will have to play longer than 24 hours.”

CSKA Wants Kirilenko

Hooped Up | September 17, 2008

Will Andrei Kirilenko go back to Russia and spurn the NBA?

“CSKA wants to offer Kirilenko a contract to rival that of other NBA stars and what seems to be the appeal in this case for CSKA is that Kirilenko, doesn’t occupy the position of non-russian player, which allows CSKA to keep him in the roster at all times, the same reason they got Khryapa and Khaun,i.e. to get ahead of the competition. It also says that this might be the reason that Kirilenko has not renewed with the Utah Jazz yet.”

Kirilenko Honored To Carry Russian Flag Into Olympics

Hooped Up | August 4, 2008

Last year, Andrei Kirilenko led his Russian men’s national basketball team in the 2007 European Championships.

This Friday, he’ll lead — in a different way — Russia’s entire Olympic sports delegation in the Beijing Summer Games’ opening ceremonies. Kirilenko has been selected to carry the Russian flag as he and his Olympic peers enter into and parade around Beijing’s National Stadium.

“Representing in front of the world, you know, is a big honor,” said the longtime Utah Jazz forward, “and I will try to do my best.”

I am sure that no man can derive more pleasure from money or power than I do from seeing
a pair of basketball goals in some out of the way place–deep in the Wisconsin woods
an old barrel hoop nailed to a tree, or a weather-beaten shed on the Mexican border
with a rusty iron hoop nailed to one end.
