Hooped Up: Minnesota Timberwolves 08-09 Season Preview

Hooped Up | October 27, 2008

A team-by-team preview of all 30 NBA teams heading into the 2008 - 2009 season, Hooped Up style.

Minnesota Timberwolves
Fresh off a Championship assist to the Boston Celtics, GM Kevin “Santa Claus” McHale wasn’t done there.  In the draft he traded talented guards OJ Mayo and Mario Chalmer and went with Kevin Love instead.  I’m sure McHale has received both thank you cards and beer from Miami and Memphis for the gift by now.

Is there any relief in sight for this franchise?

Projected Starters: PG - Randy Foye / SG - Mike Miller / SF - Corey Brewer / PF - Kevin Love / C - Al Jefferson

Additions: Mike Miller, Rodney Carney, Brian Cardinal, Calvin Booth, Jason Collins, Kevin Love, Nikola Pekovic

Losses: Marko Jaric, Antoine Walker, Michael Doleac

Projected Wins: 25+

Team Theme Song:  Guns N Roses - Patients
If you play for this squad or are a fan of this squad, you’ll need plenty of patients!

Overall
The OJ Mayo trade will especially come back to haunt them in the future but, adding Mike Miller and Rodney Carney wasn’t that bad of a move in the short time either. If Kevin Love turns out to be “Kevin McHale light” then the Timberwolves will have a nice pairing with him and Al Jefferson in the front court for years to come. But if you were terrible with Kevin Garnett you’ll only be worse without him and this year will be another season of questions for this francaise.

Better ask Kevin McHale where he gets his sweaters from because it’s going to be another long, cold, losing one in Minnesota. Brr!

Ollie May Land In Minnesota

Hooped Up | October 15, 2008

Kevin Ollie auditioned for that third-guard spot, all the more important now that Sebastian Telfair will sit out three games to start the season, by playing 17 minutes, including leading the offense in the game’s final minutes when the Bulls got to three points but no closer, thanks in part to six of Ollie’s eight points in the final three minutes. One very memorable moment: Craig Smith showing his once-swollen knee was all better with a thunderous dunk over Tyrus Thomas and Andres Nocioni in the fourth quarter. So inspired by the dunk and the spring in his knee, Smith shouted at the United Center rafters in a primal scream sort of like a former Timberwolf once did.

Telfair Will Start The Season With Suspension

Hooped Up | October 14, 2008

Leave the guns alone kiddie’s!

“Sebastian Telfair will start the season on the sidelines due to a suspension that will be announced sometime before his Timberwolves open the season Oct. 29 against Sacramento. Telfair was sentenced last month to three years’ probation for misdemeanor possession of a loaded .45-caliber handgun, speeding and driving without a license in Westchester in April 2007. He was a member of the Celtics at the time of his arrest. Since his case has been resolved, his suspension by the NBA is automatic. The league needs only to determine how many games he’ll serve, with sources indicating it will be for a minimum of two.”

Kevin Love Has Horse On Lock

Hooped Up | October 3, 2008

Kevin Love could take his HORSE routine on the road and charge admission.  Love hits shots with ease and has the HORSE game on lock, in this video. Somebody needs to take the coffee and Red Bull away from that announcer guy though.  He was acting as if Kevin Love was Santa Claus or Esther Baxter or something.

Jefferson Sprains MCL

Hooped Up | September 19, 2008

When the best player on the team goes down, it’s always bad!  Unless, you are trying to occupy the leagues standings basement again.

“Timberwolves star Al Jefferson is expected to miss at least the first week of training camp because of a mildly sprained knee ligament. Jefferson sprained the medial collateral ligament in his right knee when he collided with a teammate during a workout at the team’s Target Center training facility on Tuesday. A medical imaging test on Wednesday confirmed the mild sprain, which is expected to sideline him two to three weeks.”

Odds Favor Blazers To Add Livingston

Hooped Up | September 15, 2008

Like I’ve mentioned before, you’d be crazy to not sign Livingston to a deal if you have the cap room and roster space.

“Free-agent guard Shaun Livingston, fighting back from a devastating knee injury, had private workouts with the Portland Trail Blazers and Minnesota Timberwolves in the past 48 hours and league sources expect him to sign with one of three teams next week. Livingston worked out in Portland on Friday, and two league sources believed the Blazers are the favorites to sign the ex-Los Angeles Clippers guard. Still, it is unclear whether Portland general manager Kevin Pritchard has been convinced enough to add yet another guaranteed contract to his roster. ”

Jason Collins Out Eight Weeks

Hooped Up |

Just how fast are you driving a golf cart, for it to be skidding out of control and tipping over?  This is surely a question only Monta Eliis can answer.

“New Wolves center Jason Collins is expected to miss eight weeks after undergoing surgery on a triceps tendon in his elbow on Monday in California. He was injured in what a team spokesman called a “freak” accident that occured when his golf cart skidded on wet ground and tipped over. If he’s sidelined for exactly eight weeks, Collins, acquired from Memphis in the draft-night Love-for-O.J. Mayo deal, would miss all of training camp and the regular season’s first week.”

Wolves Unveil New Uniforms

Hooped Up | August 19, 2008

I don’t know yet if I’m  hot or cool on the new 20th anniversary Timberwolves uni’s that leaked long before these official photos came out over at the TWolves Blog and Ball Don’t Lie.  What I am hot on, are those kicks Mike Miller is wearing.

Golly, those are hot Pete!

Does anybody know what they are called?
