Hooped Up: Los Angeles Clippers 08-09 Season Preview

Hooped Up | October 28, 2008

A team-by-team preview of all 30 NBA teams heading into the 2008 - 2009 season, Hooped Up style.

Los Angeles Clippers
Baron “The Beard” Davis arrived and things looked great!  Then they lost Elton Brand to Philadelphia, Corey Maggette to Golden State, Jason Williams to retirement, Shaun Livingston to Miami and longtime GM Elgin Baylor was fired. On the bright side, they added sleeper Eric Gordon from the draft, defensive wall Marcus Camby, swingman Ricky Davis and Jenny Craig…well kinda.

This team will be fun to watch but will that be just about it?

Projected Starters: PG - Baron Davis / SG - Cuttino Mobley / SF - Al Thornton / PF - Marcus Camby / C - Chris Kaman

Additions: Baron Davis, Marcus Camby, Ricky Davis,Brian Skinner, Jason Hart, Steve Novak, Eric Gordon, DeAndre Jordan, Mike Taylor

Losses: Elton Brand, Corey Maggette, Brevin Knight, Josh Powell, Shaun Livingston, Dan Dickau, James Singleton, Smush Parker, Quinton Ross, Nick Fazekas

Projected Wins: 35+

Team Theme Song:  Ghostface Killah feat. Jadakiss and Comp - Run
This team is built for the fastbreak and they will run and run they shall!

Overall
Even though this isn’t the same team that Baron Davis signed up for in the beginning, the Clippers still have a lot of bright spots and will be exciting.  Getting Marcus Camby was a steal and will pair with Chris Kaman to form a stellar frontcourt situation.  Eric Gordon was also a steal and had NBA range in college and will be deadly enough to unseat Cuttino Mobley by seasons end as a starter. Tim Thomas, Al Thorton and Ricky Davis round out a group of very athletic forwards that finish well and will get easy buckets with Baron Davis leading the break.

This team will be hella fun to watch but, because of the deep west they might find themselves the odd man out for that 8th spot.

Camby Accepts New Chapter

Hooped Up | October 24, 2008

A little while after Camby was traded he was a bitter dude that wanted no part of the Clippers, now he’s come around and is ready for a new chapter.  I’d feel sorry for him but, oh ya he’s a millionare. Hell, if I had a time machine and had to play for the 1995 Vancouver Grizzlies, I’d be as happy as a girl in Bed & Body Works buying pump soap.

“Whatever the reason, former Nuggets center Marcus Camby no longer openly harbors the bitterness that came over him when Denver traded him to the Los Angeles Clippers in a cost-cutting move July 13. Sure, Camby still believes the Nuggets could have handled the situation better, but he appears to have moved on from the days when he felt “blindsided, distraught, disrespected.” ”I was upset at the time, how things transpired out there in Denver, but after being out here, that is like a thing of the past right now,” Camby said during a telephone interview from Los Angeles. “I’m enjoying my new situation. I’m enjoying this new chapter of my career. I’m going to try to make the best of the situation, but I think the situation can be a great one and a promising one.”

WAG’s: Baron Davis And Kate Hudson?

Hooped Up | October 21, 2008

Baron Davis and Kate Hudson were spotted leaving new Hollywood hotspot Bardot after a night of partying. However this might not be anything as these two were old high school buddies in Santa Monica.  The real question is, did Baron Davis “stop short” on Kate Hudson.

Moving back home has it’s perks!

Davis Will Not Need Surgery

Hooped Up |

The Clips finally got some good news and learned that the face of the organization and face of Jenny Craig Baron Davis will not need surgery on his injured finger.   However, the Jenny Craig’s might still win more games than the Clippers this year.

“There may have been more from a certain point guard named Baron Davis, but that was the essential information of the day. Davis will not need surgery for his torn finger ligament and could resume basketball activities in about a week, the team said.

“I told him it was great news,” Dunleavy said. “It’s about as good as I could have hoped for.”

Baylor Out, Dunleavy In As Clips GM

Hooped Up | October 8, 2008

Why pay two people to make your club mediocre when you only need to pay one.

“The Los Angeles Clippers replaced long-time general manager Elgin Baylor on Tuesday, allowing coach Mike Dunleavy to assume the responsibilities.

The team did not specify a reason for Baylor’s departure. According to the Los Angeles Times, Dunleavy said that he was told Baylor was retiring. Comments made by Baylor, however, suggest otherwise.

“There’s a dispute going on,” Baylor told the Orange County Register. “My attorney advised me not to discuss it.”

An 11-time All-Star as a player, Baylor joined the Clippers in 1986 as vice president of basketball operations after a stellar 14-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers and a brief coaching stint with the New Orleans Jazz. ”

Eric Gordon Out Two Weeks

Hooped Up | October 3, 2008

Already a guard short heading into training camp after Jason Williams retired last week. Rookie guard Eric Gordon is now out for two weeks after suffering a high right ankle sprain.
If retirement or Jenny Craig don’t get ya, a sprained ankle will I tells ya.
“I mean, the good thing is it’s not broke or anything,” Gordon said. “I’ll be back for sure next week. It’s only going to be a couple of days. I’m really not worried about it.
“I was in shape before training camp. Whenever I get back, I’ll be just fine. . . . I got a rebound and I just came down on somebody’s foot. Stuff happens like that all the time.”

Maggette: Baron Will Be In For A Rude Awakening

Hooped Up | October 1, 2008

Anybody that goes to the LA Clippers on their own will, has got to be an optimist or does not have a television.  But could playing for the Clippers be worst than it appears? Corey Maggette thinks so.

“New Clippers’ point guard Baron Davis played it cool when asked Tuesday about the comments ex-Clipper Corey Maggette made about his former team at the Golden State Warriors media day. Maggette, who left via free agency over the summer, was quoted in various Bay Area newspapers as saying “Baron will be in for a rude awakening.” Davis, who said he speaks with Maggette frequently and considers him a friend, said he preferred not to speak about Maggette’s feelings”

Jason Williams Retires

Hooped Up | September 26, 2008

It was white chocolate in…white chocolate out for Jason Williams as he called it quits and retired from the NBA today according to the Los Angeles Times.  Williams joined the Clippers this summer as a free-agent on a one year deal and never made it to training camp with his new club.

In a 10 year career, Williams played for the Sacramento Kings, Memphis Grizzlies and Miami Heat winning a championship in 2006.  For his career Williams averaged 11.4 points and 6.3 assists and racket up a ton of highlights especially with the Kings. That crossover on Gary Payton, still makes me hold my head!

Above is a Jason Williams highlight package with the Red Hot Chili Peppers song Californication used for the audio, which I find insanely ironic.

Baron Davis Named Jenny Craig Spokesperson

Hooped Up |

Earlier this week, Baron Davis reviled that he is using the Jenny Craig weight lost program to shed some unwanted off-season weight.  I guess the slim and trim people of Jenny Craig were listening, as today according to The Mercury News Baron Davis was named an official spokesperson for the weight loss brand joining Queen Latifah and Valerie Bertinelli.

Jenny Craig just turned into free Jenny Craig.

Here are some pictures that surfaced of Jessica Alba and a possibly slimmer Baron Davis on a beach in Cabo via Popsugar.
