Meet The Naismith Trophy America

Week 1 of the NFL season was pretty awesome especially because I won some money, but so was seeing Team USA complete their mission to finally win another FIBA World Championship. Something they have not been able to do since 1994. Kevin Durant looked all-galactic first team once again, dropping 28 points on the host nation to help the U.S. squad cruise to a 81-64 win over Turkey for the gold medal. Which also automatically qualified them for the 2012 Olympics in London with the win.

It’s been a while since the trophy resided in North America, so you might as well get familiar with its decadence in detail once again America.

In 1998, the trophy was remodeled and the new design included cool things like a decagonal rotating middle piece, with carved maps of the continents and precious stones (black onyx, yellow citrine, greenchyrsopase, red garnet and blue topaz) inlaid to symbolizes the five continents and represent all the regions in the world.

Dr. Naismith’s name engraved on all four sides in Latin, Arabic, Chinese, and Egyptian hieroglyphs. 975/1000 sterling silver on the upper and lower parts – gold plated on the inside – and the 14-carat yellow gold middle part. And the top of the cup has a circumference of 21 centimeters and weighs a whopping nine kilograms (20 pounds).
