Outlet Pass: Sloan Extended, Knicks Talk Trade + Minutes For Marcin
Hooped Up | December 4, 2009The longest tenured coach in American professional sports isn’t going anywhere. The Utah Jazz announced Wednesday night that Jerry Sloan has signed a contract extension that will keep him with the team through 2010-11.
It will be Sloan’s 23rd season after taking over as head coach of the Jazz on Dec. 9, 1988, when Frank Layden stepped down.
Terms of Sloan’s newest deal are not known, but his current annual salary is $5.5 million.
“I’m happy with the fact they still want to have me here. …” Sloan said. “Our ownership has always been very supportive. That’s something I’ve always appreciated.”

Several sources believe the Bulls are agreeable to a package of Tyrus Thomas and Jerome James for Knicks forward Al Harrington. Thus far, Donnie Walsh has resisted parting with Harrington, but discussions are still active and the teams have explored different combinations in recent days that would ultimately deliver Thomas to the Knicks.

Don’t get Marcin Gortat wrong: He wants more than anything to help the Orlando Magic win a title this season as Dwight Howard’s back-up. But he told the Sentinel on Thursday that he eventually wants to move out of Howard’s immense shadow. “I love the organization, but I’m not going to stay here being a back-up player and playing five minutes a game,” Gortat said. “I hope people understand that. I know I can have a bigger role on another team.”
