Outlet Pass: Knicks Stun, Sheed’s Ts + Sinking Raptors

Hooped Up | December 2, 2009

There was no mistaking the burst of emotions — relief, joy, pride — that pumped through D’Antoni as the Knicks, looking very much like his vintage Suns, sprinted, passed and shot their way to a shocking 126-99 rout at Madison Square Garden.

Danilo Gallinari led the way with 27 points and several big defensive plays, and David Lee (24 points) and Al Harrington (22 points) provided support.

“We just caught them on one of those nights they were flat,” D’Antoni said afterward. “Does it mean anything? We’ll see going down the road. But tonight was a good night.”

Viewed through the Suns-D’Antoni prism, this was the bizarro world: the Knicks (4-14), one of the worst teams in the league, outpacing and outplaying the Suns (14-4), who arrived with the N.B.A.’s best record.

Rasheed Wallace has eight technical fouls in 18 games, which would equate to 36 over a full season. That number is astronomical, of course, especially since the NBA suspends players one game for each technical after the 16th.

“I’m concerned, but there’s nothing I am going to do about it, I’ll tell you that,’’ said Rivers. “I could talk to him until I’m blue.

“Clearly, it’s going to come to that number and he’s going to get suspended and we don’t want to lose him for games. His teammates are on him. We talked to him about it. But at the end of the day, he is going to have to solve that on his own.’’

The Raptors had a poor shooting night all around — hitting 35 per cent of their shots in the fourth quarter and just 43 per cent for the game.

Turkoglu was the worst of the bunch.

“I’m not going to take the ball out of his hands,” Raptors coach Jay Triano said. “He’s a guy who’s made plays in the past and feels as bad about it as anybody. We’d do it again. We’d give him the basketball. He’s a guy who can make plays for people.”

In three of the four games on the Raptors’ current losing streak, Turkoglu has shot poorly. In the other one, he turned the ball over seven times. Due to his contract, Turkoglu’s game will be scrutinized. So far, it has been money poorly spent.
