Outlet Pass: Rudy Gay RFA, Knicks Win + Gasol
Hooped Up | November 3, 2009Negotiations broke off Monday evening so Gay will become a restricted free agent next summer. The Griz still can match any offer sheet Gay signs. The parties had until 10:59 p.m. CST Monday to strike a deal.
“We’ve agreed to not agree,” said Jeff Austin, Gay’s agent. “We looked at different ways we might try to get something done and we weren’t able to agree.”
An NBA source said the Grizzlies’ final offer was a five-year deal worth about $50 million. Gay was asking for a deal similar to Portland’s LaMarcus Aldridge (five years, $65 million with incentives), according to the source.

Starters became reserves, veterans were dusted off and everything was new again. The Knicks, in search of another fresh start, tried one more new look Monday night: winners. It took four games to find a combination that worked, or at least one that would not spot the opponent a 20-point lead before exerting some effort. The Knicks found it at last, deploying Larry Hughes as a starter, then watching him lead the way to their first victory of the season, 117-111 over the New Orleans Hornets at Madison Square Garden.

Because his right hamstring had been slow to heal, Lakers forward Pau Gasol decided to undergo an examination, one facet of which was a sonogram that revealed he might have a slight tear.
Gasol also had an MRI test Monday, which offers a more detailed picture. The Lakers didn’t have the results by the end of practice, but they could have them by today.
