Pistons Will Name John Kuester Head Coach

Hooped Up | July 8, 2009

John Kuester??? His name might as well be Mike Jones, Who??? Mike Jones!  Call him what you will, but reportedly Joe Dumars will sign him to be the Pistons next head coach very soon.

The Pistons and John Kuester were nearing an agreement Tuesday night to make him their coach, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press. [...] Kuester spent the past two seasons as a Cleveland Cavaliers assistant and was on Larry Brown’s championship-winning staff in 2004 with the Pistons.

He was also an NBA assistant in Orlando, Philadelphia — under Brown — New Jersey and Boston. The North Carolina graduate was a head coach at George Washington from 1985-90.

The Pistons have had five head coaches in nine seasons so if things don’t work out,  Joey D will make Kuester feel the flame. Still with so many other experienced head coach options available, the hiring of Kuester is a head scratcher at best. Then  again, given the success of Joe Dumars over the years he must know what he’s doing — right???
