Incase you missed it here is a look at the complete NBA draft board.
The Portland Trail Blazers got Greg Oden and felt like they won a championship. The Seattle SuperSonics settled for Kevin Durant, thrilling fans disappointed by the trade of All-Star Ray Allen to Boston.
The Trail Blazers ended months of debate Thursday night when they chose Oden over fellow college freshman Durant with the No. 1 pick in a highly anticipated NBA draft.
Portland opted for the 7-footer who can dominate a game with his defense over the sensational scoring of Durant, who would have been the No. 1 pick in many other years after one of the most outstanding freshman seasons in NCAA history.
But franchise centers are hard to find, and most believe the Blazers got one.
The Sonics and Celtics have agreed to a trade which will see Ray Allen join Paul Pierce in Boston, while the fifth pick, Delonte West and Wally Szczerbiak will be headed to Seattle. The Sonics will take Jeff Green with pick 5, if available.
The Knicks have agreed in principle to acquire Zach Randolph, Fred Jones and Dan Dickau from the Blazers for Channing Frye and Steve Francis.
The Golden State Warriors traded veteran guard Jason Richardson to the Charlotte Bobcats on Thursday night for the rights to North Carolina forward Brandan Wright, the eighth overall pick.
Charlotte also got the rights to Alabama forward Jermareo Davidson, Golden State’s choice with the 36th selection.
“I’ll miss Jason, of course,” Mullin said. “He’s one of my favorite players in the league … but we feel good about Brandan coming in. That doesn’t make it any easier.”
The Spurs might not have to do much retooling this summer. Jacque Vaughn, Matt Bonner and Melvin Ely are the only certain free agents, though Michael Finley and Fabricio Oberto could join them if they decide to opt out of their contracts. The contracts of Bruce Bowen and Robert Horry aren’t fully guaranteed yet, but that seems to be a mere formality. Horry, who turns 37 in August, has already said he wants to put off his retirement plans to return for one more season, and Holt and coach Gregg Popovich both sounded like they want him back.
Grizzlies owner Michael Heisley is expected to name the team’s president/GM this week. Mark Jackson was summoned to Memphis on the off day between Games 3 and 4 for an interview. Celtics GM Chris Wallace appears to be the other prime candidate. John Nash, Kiki Vandeweghe, John Gabriel and B.J. Armstrong also have been mentioned.
Spurs assistant P.J. Carlesimo, nine seasons removed from the Latrell Sprewell stigma, feels he owns a legitimate shot at being hired as Sonics head coach. Though I’ve got to wonder how much a wife, who’s been ill (she’s fine now), and two small children will factor into a decision to take a job that’ll have the family in Seattle next season and perhaps Oklahoma City or Kansas City thereafter.
